Whats Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Loss Therapy?

Updated 08/11/23

Over the years, men and women have tried a whole range of different treatments to promote hair growth. One of the latest treatments on the market is Platelet Rich Plasma therapy. Commonly known as PRP. In recent years PRP has been used to treat male and female pattern hair loss.

PRP refers to the concentrated blood plasma. They contain the platelet count. Which is around five times greater than the norm. These platelets are rich in transforming growth factors. Includes platelet derived growth factors, vascular endothelial growth factors. As well as multiple bioactive proteins. They support hair growth and the wound healing process.

Red cell benefits

The composition of human blood consists of plasma platelets. As well as red and white blood cells. Platelets play an integral role in the wound healing process. Particularly by initiating the preliminary stage of coagulation.

PRP involves drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood. It is then spun at very high speed in a centrifuged. This is to separate the blood into its constituent parts. The plasma and platelets are then removed from the solution and injected or rubbed into the scalp.

Advantages of PRP Therapy against hair loss are:

  • Simple, non-surgical procedure
  • Multiple Injections: procedure lasting approximately 60 minutes
  • Safe and reliable results
  • Very quick recovery period
  • Natural looking end results

What is the appeal of PRP?

For centuries people have tried to combat hair loss by rubbing all manner of substances into their scalps, usually with little or no success. PRP therapy works on the principle that platelet-rich plasma contains the essential building blocks required for tissue regeneration and healing. PRP therapy is also thought to strengthen hair follicles and thicken existing hair.

What is PRP and how does it work?

The doctor takes a little blood which is then treated in a centrifuge so that only the enriched cells or platelets (PRP) remain. The PRP or highly concentrated Platelet Rich Plasma, including essential growth proteins, is injected into the scalp or areas to be treated using a special micro needle. It is possible to use PRP Hair Loss Therapy alone to promote hair growth or it can also be used in combination with hair transplant or restoration surgery and medication.

How the Hair Dr Uses PRP

The Hair Dr carries out a thorough analysis of a patient’s condition before assessing whether the application of PRP hair loss therapy is suitable. PRP therapy is used in hair restoration for natural looking results. Using a thin needle as mentioned above, your own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is injected into the scalp. Then the growth factors in your blood cells do their job and hair growth is naturally stimulated.

PRP Hair Restoration is suitable for both men and women. It is a state of the art, non-surgical, totally natural, alternative medical procedure used for the treatment of hair loss or hair thinning. It is an injectable treatment which uses the patient’s own blood.  Our blood plasma (PRP) contains active growth factors which can promote hair growth. Helping to restore one’s confidence, the result is a fuller, healthier looking head of hair.

The cost of Platelet Rich Plasma hair treatment can be considerable, as more sessions may be needed to obtain the desired result. PRP is also being used in conjunction with some hair transplant procedures and works well synergistically with minoxidil and DHT blocker.

Who is PRP therapy for?

At the Hair Dr we believe PRP therapy is effective in treating pattern baldness, receding hairlines and even AlopeciaPRP therapy is available as a hair loss treatment for both male and female hair loss. Patients undergo at least eight PRP therapy cycles and are expected to see the first signs of growth after just four. Initially patients would expect to see little more than “fuzz” growing in the affected areas of their scalp.

What are the drawbacks?

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy can also be quite expensive with a typically, single PRP cycle costing around £150, a ‘complete’ set of eight consultations can therefore cost up to £1200. This is of course without the cost of any additional treatments or medications.
