FUE Hair transplants

Follicular Unit Excision

Of the two main hair transplant techniques, Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair restoration procedure.

Strong, healthy hair is removed from a donor zone (usually the back of the head, where hair growth is normally unaffected by hair loss). The hairs are removed from the donor zone in small natural groupings or follicular units of between one and four hairs. These units are approximately 0.75 – 1mm wide, and are carefully removed using a surgical tool called a micropunch.

The follicles are checked and cleaned under magnification. This is critical to ensure the future success of the follicle.

The follicular units are then stored in a special holding solution, while the surgeon creates the recipient sites in the areas of hair loss. The whole process is usually completed in eight hours, although more extensive transplants may require two sessions.

Hair falls out of transplanted follicles after around 30 days, with natural regrowth occurring from 3 months. Full regrowth is expected after 12-18 months.

Is FUE Right for you?

When would we recommend an FUE Transplant?

If the areas of hair loss require different types of hair, then FUE would allow us to ‘cherry-pick’ the right hairs for the right hair loss area.

If the patient has a preference for short hair at the back and sides of the head, FUE would reduce the potential for any visible scarring.

Certain careers and lifestyles require shorter recovery periods. For example, a professional sportsperson would prefer FUE, for a quicker return to their training schedule. No stitches or overnight hospital stay required.

What to expect

FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

We will shave your donor hair and in preparation for hair extraction (a non-shave option is available on a suitable candidate). We’ll administer local anaesthetic and sedatives before your Hair Dr surgeon begins performing the FUE donor hair extraction. The hair units are then separated into natural groups of 1-4 hairs, cleaned and maintained in a bespoke “holding solution”. Your Hair Dr surgeon will then create the custom-made recipient sites, also known as slits, where the hair units will be placed starting from the hairline and working back. Skilled technicians will work alongside your Hair Dr surgeon to carefully place each hair units/follicular units creating natural-looking results.

Following your FUE hair transplant surgery you will receive a post-op treatment, medications and a full after-care plan to ensure your hair transplant journey is seamless.

I can’t praise and thank Dr Arshad and his wonderful team enough. I never thought I'd say this again but my hair is amazing. I’m now at the 8 month stage and my hair is back. I have my hairline back and I still have a long way to go, so it’s only going to get better and better. Thicker and thicker! I’m sure by 12 months it will be amazing.

I give the Hair Dr a 5 star review because I truly believe it to be a 5 star experience. Anyone considering this procedure I would 100% recommend the Hair Dr. In terms of the recovery a few weeks of down time will be well worth it in the long run if you are, as I was, suffering with confidence issues with your hair.

Frequently asked

FUE Hair Transplant Surgery FAQs

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant technique. FUE removes natural hair groups from the donor area. Hair groups consist of between 1 to 4 hairs. A micro punch surrounds the hair unit. No larger than 0.75 – 1 mm in diameter. As a result there is minimal change.

An FUE hair transplant typically takes around eight hours to perform. The time depends on the number of grafts required. Most FUE is a single day session. Two day FUE hair transplants are possible for large sessions.

The Hair Dr is committed to advancing the practice of FUE transplants. The minimally invasive FUE can leave little signs a hair transplant has been performed. Even on close inspection. The microdots heal overtime. As a result, they blend with the natural skin complexion. Allowing for short and sometimes even shaved hairstyles.

No Hair Dr hair transplant should be painful. As a result, an FUE hair transplant should not be a painful procedure. Some minor discomfort while the local anaesthesia is administered. Thereafter there should be no feeling of discomfort during your procedure.

A natural FUE result relies on a number of factors. The quality, standards and experience of your FUE Doctor and the technical team. The understanding of facial bone structure and hairline design. The correct use of hair angles and hair distribution.

Each patient will heal differently. As a result, aftercare is created for each patient specifically. Follow the instructions given by the Clinic following your FUE hair transplant. This is to achieve the best healing and result. Healing starts immediately and the first days require the most care. The transplant hairs fall out around 30 days after your FUE hair transplant and the follicles start to regrow 3-4 months later.

The cost of a FUE hair transplant is personal. It depends on a number of factors. For example, the size of the area to treat, the number of grafts required. An FUE hair transplant with the Hair Dr includes post-operative medications. Including regular check-ups. FUE repair surgery carries demanding challenges. As a result, every case is judged on individual merits before providing a cost estimate. A full assessment will provide a personalised quote for your hair restoration.
