What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Updated 31/08/2023

Did you know? A developing foetus has hair follicles by week 22. At this stage there are about 5 million hair follicles on the body. A total of one million on the head. Around 100,000 follicles on the scalp. This is the total number of hair follicles ever. Since hair follicles do not regenerate or multiple. It’s normal to notice a change in hair density when getting older. Naturally, not genetic hair loss.

Correlation between Hair Loss Treatment and Self-Esteem

Hair plays an important role in our self-image. Also social perceptions. It can have a huge impact on wellbeing. For men and women. Reversing hair loss can be a lifeline for many. The Hair Dr specialises in FUE hair transplant treatments. The most innovative, trusted and natural procedure. First being named by Dr Bernstein in 2002.

Male pattern baldness affects 6.5 million men in the UK

Hair loss is an extremely common condition. Affecting both men and women. But doesn’t mean it’s less stressful when it happens to you. Hair loss often starts along the temples and crown. For a few men, this can start in the late teens. But for most, it starts in the late 20´s and early 30´s. Initially it starts with a little thinning. Followed by more advanced hair loss. Resulting in the scalp becoming visible. For some men hair loss is not a big issue. However, others suffer great emotional distress. With hair loss associated with a lack of self-confidence.

Male pattern baldness

The most common type of hair loss is male pattern baldness. Which according to the NHS, affects around half of men by the age of 50. Not to mention more and more women today. As hair loss does not discriminate between genders.

Getting hair transplant surgery is becoming a lot more ‘normal’. It was reported recently n the press Prince Harry is set to undergo a hair transplant. Todate, not yet confirmed. Other celebrities linked to a hair restoration are, Wayne Rooney, Chris Martin, Louis Walsh and Gordon Ramsey. Also, Shane Warne, David Beckham and Matthew McConaughey, just to name a few. Who are rumoured to have undergone some hair restoration.

This rise in popularity in hair transplants by well-known people has increased overall exposure. Also due to the progression of surgical options that no longer leave linear scars. Another reason for the increase is the number of clinics becoming available and readily affordable. Though hair transplants are becoming more popular, this does not mean that it should be a surgery which you should take lightly. Taking the time to do your research before picking a clinic is vital in ensuring that the procedure is completed to a high standard. At the Hair Dr, we have a team of surgeons on board who are guaranteed to deliver results and are happy to meet you for a consultation before any decisions are made.

We suggest a treatment plan which suits your individual needs, ensuring that you feel completely confident with the procedure and team. We offer free consultations with one of our surgeons (generally the surgeon who will be operating on you) who will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

What is Male Patten Baldness?

Male pattern baldness, also called Androgenic Alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in men. Each hair on the head has a growth cycle. With male pattern baldness, this growth cycle begins to weaken and the hair follicle shrinks, producing shorter and finer strands of hair. Eventually, the growth cycle for each hair ends and no new hair grows in its place.

Typically, male pattern baldness follows a pattern where the hair begins to thin and recede at the temples. At the same time, a bald patch gradually develops in the middle of the scalp. The receding hairline and the bald patch on the crown gradually enlarge and join, leaving a patch at the front that will eventually thin. A rim of hair is often left around the back and sides of the scalp. In some men, this rim of hair also thins and goes to leave a completely bald scalp. The Norwood Scale measure the amount of hair loss and you can find out more information on the Norwood Scale here.

What are the causes of Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern hair loss is believed to be due to a combination of genetics and the male hormone dihydrotestosterone. Research has found that male pattern baldness is associated with male sex hormones called androgens. The androgens have many functions including regulating hair growth, so if they are affected, hair loss can occur.
