Information
What Causes Hair Loss?
There are many things that can cause hair loss in both men and women. For instance, about 3-4 months after being ill or having major surgery, it’s not uncommon to lose hair in large amounts. Hormonal issues can also lead to hair loss. Some people may have problems with their thyroid being overactive or underactive; either way, the result can be hair loss. However, correct hormone levels can stop hair loss.Â
In addition, women may lose their hair about 3 months or so after having a baby. This loss is also hormone related. Once the hormones are balanced out again, the natural cycle of growth and loss restarts, usually resulting in hair growing back again.Â
Medications may also cause hair loss. This issue can improve once you stop taking the medications. Medicines that may cause hair loss include blood thinners, medications used to treat gout, drugs used in chemotherapy, Vitamin A (if taken in large doses), birth control pills, and antidepressants.Â
Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss; however, once the infection has been treated, hair usually grows back in again.Â
