Several Causes of Hair Loss
There are different reasons for hair loss, which vary from person to person. Here are some of the most common causes of hair loss in humans:
Androgenic Alopecia
This is a genetic condition that’s also called male pattern baldness (MPB) and female pattern baldness (FPB) in women.
Traction Alopecia
This is caused by pressure on the hair shaft and follicle; the pressure may be caused by overly tight, tied-back hairstyles such as braids.
Alopecia Areata
This is an autoimmune disease that’s caused by the immune system attacking hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out.
Other causes of hair loss can include:
- Adverse reaction to medications
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Scalp infections and conditions
- Physical and emotional stress
- Chemical scarring and burns
Many of these causes of hair loss are usually temporary, and addressing the root causes of these issues may promote hair regrowth.
We offer different hair transplants and treatments that can also help promote hair regrowth. These are beneficial treatments; however, we often receive many questions about hair transplants. So, we’ve put together some of the most common questions and the answers to help you learn more about these procedures.
What is a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure where hair follicles are moved from one part of the body (donor) to another area (recipient) where additional hair is wanted.
Hair transplants are done under local anaesthesia. Once the anaesthesia is working, the doctor then removes hair follicles from the scalp by removing a strip of skin and hair. These may be dissected under a microscope or by punching out individual hair follicle groupings one at a time (FUE).
Hair transplants usually involves transplanting thousands of individual follicle groupings. This is a labour-intensive procedure that may take an entire day.

Our Hair loss clinic Manchester Services
We offer the following hair transplant services:
Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)
Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a leading hair transplant method we provide, known for its minimally invasive nature. This technique involves harvesting robust, healthy hair from the donor area, typically located at the back of the scalp, where hair growth is less likely to be impacted by hair loss.
Hair is extracted from the donor zone in naturally occurring clusters called follicular units, which usually contain one to four hairs. These units, measuring around 0.75 to 1 millimeter in width, are meticulously removed using a specialised micro punch tool designed for this precise procedure.
Once extracted, the follicles are carefully examined and cleaned under magnification to ensure quality. They are then preserved in a holding solution while the surgeon prepares the areas on the scalp where the new hair will be implanted. Depending on the extent of the transplant, the procedure can take up to eight hours, with some cases requiring a second session for optimal results.
Body Hair Follicular Unit Excision (BHFUE)
Body Hair Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is an innovative technique designed to enhance the available donor supply for hair transplantation.
This method involves harvesting hair from various parts of the body, an intricate process due to the flexibility and unique characteristics of many body areas, which can make extraction more complex.
Follicular Unit Transplants (FUT)
Follicular Unit Transplants are also known as the “strip technique.” This method requires greater surgical expertise. A small strip of skin is removed from the back or sides of the head. These strips contain the donor hair. The reason for using a strip is that this method allows many hairs to be removed at the same time.
Next, the hairs are removed from the strip in follicular units, cleaned, and placed in the holding solution. The surgeon then creates recipient sites in areas of hair loss and implants the follicular units in the same manner as the FUE procedure (see above).
Beard/Eyebrow/Eyelash Transplants
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), often referred to as the “strip method,” is a hair restoration technique that demands a high level of surgical precision. In this procedure, a thin strip of skin containing healthy hair follicles is carefully removed from the back or sides of the scalp, where hair growth typically remains unaffected by hair loss. This approach enables the collection of a substantial number of hair follicles in a single step.
The harvested strip is then meticulously dissected into individual follicular units, each containing a natural grouping of hairs. These units are thoroughly cleaned and preserved in a holding solution to maintain their integrity. The surgeon then prepares the balding or thinning areas by creating recipient sites and implants the follicular units into these sites with precision, following a process similar to that used in the Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) method.

Who is Right for a Hair Transplant?
Those who have hair loss that’s hereditary, also known as androgenic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness) are suitable for hair transplants. However, it’s necessary to have enough donor hair to be transplanted to make a difference in a person’s appearance.
It is possible to treat other types of hair loss with a hair transplant, such as those who have traction alopecia and hair loss caused by burns or scarring.
We can also take hair from the scalp to transplant to the eyebrows, eyelashes, moustaches, and beards when an injury or skin conditions have caused a loss in these areas.
No, surgical hair restoration is categorised as a cosmetic treatment, so it’s not usually covered under the NHS. However, they do sometimes make exceptions for cases that involve scalp or facial injury and burns.

FAQs about Hair Transplants
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves moving hair follicles from one part of the body, typically the back or sides of the scalp (the donor area), to a bald or thinning area (the recipient area). This is often used to treat male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness, or hair loss due to injury or other conditions.
The main techniques are:
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): Also known as strip surgery, this method involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area, dissecting it into individual follicular units, and transplanting them to the recipient area.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): This method involves individually extracting follicular units directly from the donor area and implanting them into the recipient area. This technique is less invasive and leaves minimal scarring.
Transplanted hair typically falls out within the first few weeks after the procedure (a normal part of the process). New hair growth usually starts within 3 to 4 months, with significant improvement visible after 6 to 9 months. Full results can be seen after about a year.
The results are generally long-lasting, as the transplanted follicles are typically resistant to the hormone (DHT) that causes hair loss. However, natural hair loss may continue in untreated areas, potentially requiring further procedures.
Yes, alternatives include:
- Medications: Such as minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia).
- Non-surgical treatments: Like PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy.
- Lifestyle changes: Improving diet and reducing stress.
