Benefits of Hair Transplants

Hair transplants provide a natural, permanent solution to hair loss, using the individual’s own hair for realistic results that require minimal maintenance. This treatment boosts self-confidence and offers long-term cost savings compared to temporary alternatives like wigs or hairpieces.

Modern techniques, such as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), involve minimal scarring and short recovery periods, allowing patients to resume normal activities quickly. Transplanted hair can be styled, cut, and treated like natural hair, making it a versatile and effective option for hair restoration with a low risk of complications when performed by a skilled surgeon.

What is a Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)?

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair transplant technique where individual hair follicles are extracted from a donor area, typically the back or sides of the scalp, and transplanted to thinning or balding areas. The procedure involves using a small punch tool to remove follicles with minimal scarring, followed by the careful placement of these follicles into tiny incisions made in the recipient area.

FUE offers several advantages, including minimal scarring, a quicker recovery time, and natural-looking results when performed by an experienced surgeon. Although it can be time-consuming and costly, it is a preferred method for those seeking effective hair restoration with minimal impact on daily life.

Hair Transplant in Halifax FAQs

The duration of the Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) procedure depends on the extent of the hair restoration needed. Typically, a single session can last between 4 to 8 hours. For larger areas, multiple sessions may be required. Your surgeon will provide a more precise estimate based on your individual needs.
Most patients experience a relatively quick recovery after FUE. You may have some swelling and redness for a few days, but these usually subside within a week. Many people can return to normal activities within a few days, though it’s advisable to avoid strenuous exercise for a couple of weeks.
One of the advantages of FUE is that it leaves minimal scarring. The small, dot-like scars from the extraction sites are typically not noticeable and are less conspicuous compared to the linear scars from older hair transplant methods. Most scars heal well and blend with the surrounding hair.

What is an FUT Hair Transplant?

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a traditional hair restoration technique where a strip of scalp is surgically removed from the donor area, usually the back or sides of the head. This strip is then dissected into individual follicular units, which are transplanted into tiny incisions made in the thinning or balding areas of the scalp.

While FUT allows for the extraction of a large number of follicles in a single session and can effectively cover extensive hair loss, it leaves a linear scar in the donor area and has a longer recovery time compared to newer methods like FUE. Despite these considerations, FUT remains a proven method for achieving dense, natural-looking results.

Hair Transplant in Halifax FAQs

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area, usually the back or sides of the head, under local anaesthesia. The strip is then dissected into individual follicular units, which are transplanted into tiny incisions made in the recipient area where hair loss is present. The donor area is stitched up, leaving a linear scar that will heal over time.
The FUT procedure leaves a linear scar in the donor area, which may be visible if your hair is cut very short. However, the scar can often be covered by longer hair or strategically placed styles. The visibility of the scar can also diminish as it heals.
Recovery from an FUT hair transplant generally takes a bit longer than newer methods like FUE. Patients may experience swelling and discomfort in the donor and recipient areas for a few days. Most people can return to normal activities within a week but should avoid strenuous exercise and follow post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing.
